Take in the Midwest’s largest tourist attraction while relaxing and saving a few bucks along the way with Navy Pier’s free “Movies on the Pier” series.

The series begins this Thursday and continues every Thursday through September 10 and will feature cinema classics for all different ages in the pier’s covered outdoor theater venue, the Pepsi Skyline Stage. Many of the films have some tie in with events going on in Chicago or on the pier.

The fun gets kicked off this week at 8 p.m. with Chicago staple “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” Matthew Broderick plays the title character in this comedy that showcases a teen from the suburbs who splits for the city with his best friend and girlfriend, visits several iconic Chicago sites, skips school, and gets in some good-natured trouble along the way. See how many city landmarks you can identify while relaxing with the city as a backdrop.

The stakes are elevated the following week as movie goers are treated to Tom Cruise’s aviators in “Top Gun.” Known for its dizzying aerial sequences, this film will surely satisfy those with the need for speed.

The showing also perfectly sets the stage for the famed Chicago Air and Water Show, which will be held that weekend, Aug. 15 – 16, just north of the pier at North Avenue Beach. Get your popcorn ready.

There’ll be something strange in the neighborhood Thursday, August 20. Who will we call to help? The Ghostbusters, of course! The 1984 flick with Chicagoan Bill Murray front and center will be shown as the pier encourages attendees 21 and over to try some spirits from the Landshark Beer Garden.

The last three Thursdays will feature a 30-year anniversary addition of “The Goonies,” timeless and raunchy golf classic “Caddyshack,: and a 4- year anniversary to tribute to “Jaws,” respectively. The movies with dates in August will start at 8 p.m. and those in September at 7 p.m.

No tickets are required for entry, which is first come, first serve. The theater seats 1,500. The pier is easily accessible via numerous bus lines and has several parking garages. For more information on the movie night, visit navypier.com.
