Celebrate Famed Choreographer Joel Hall at “Anja: The Unexpected”

For the past 40 years, Joel Hall has been the gold standard for choreography of contemporary and modern dance in Chicago, and to celebrate this milestone anniversary his performing arts organization the Chicago City Theatre Company will present “Anja: The Unexpected.”

Joel Hall, a native of Chicago’s Cabrini Green neighborhood, established and co-founded the Chicago City Theatre Company in 1974 and has accumulated an international reputation for his work and has many awards to boot. The organization includes the Chicago City Theatre Company, the Joel Hall Dancers, his training facility, the Joel Hall Dancers and Center, the Joel Hall Youth Dancers Program. He is also a published author, writing two books documenting his work in contemporary dance and has been named to the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame as well as being given a lifetime achievement award by the African American Arts Alliance of Chicago.

For this special night commemorating the legendary choreographer, the music ensemble will include Charles Heath as the percussionist, Ray Skilman on the saxophone, and jazz vocalist Jesse Charbonier. This production will be a world premier collaboration of the renowned Joel Hall Dancers with an ensemble of Chicago jazz legends featuring original choreography to accompany the music.

“Anja: The Unexpected” will be this Friday and Saturday August 7 – 8 and August 14 – 15 from 7:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. The performance will be at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts at 915 E. 60th St. Tickets start at $25. For more information on this performancego to joelhall.org
