The James Beard Awards concluded Monday, June 13. The awards celebrate leaders in the culinary and food media industries.

Over 20 winners were awarded across various categories regarding best restaurants, bars, chefs, food media, and more.

Chicago’s own Erick Williams was awarded Best Chef in the Great Lakes region. Williams is the owner of Virtue Restaurant and Bar, a restaurant and winery specializing in American-Southern cuisine located in Hyde Park.

Williams, born in the west side neighborhood of North Lawndale, has built his culinary career over several decades. He opened Virtue Restaurant and Bar in 2018, which quickly won acclaim.

Williams won the award against five other chefs across four states: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.

He credited the accomplishment to his ancestors, community, and culture.
