Chicago might hit 70 degrees on Friday making it perfect weather to enjoy the final days of Chicago Botanic Garden’s Orchid Show.
The Orchid Show takes place in the warm Regenstein Center Greenhouses and Galleries of the Chicago Botanic Garden. Visitors are welcomed by colorful arches of orchids along with orchids wrapped around trees, columns, and suspended from structures. This is one outing where you do not want to leave your camera at home.
Exhibiting several dresses made of natural materials and orchids and a 15-foot wind chime made of orchids helps highlight this year’s theme Orchids in Vogue. Repeat visitors to the show will be excited to see the rarely displayed Phalaenopsis ‘V3’ orchid and the hybrid of Phragmipedium kovachii, considered the most important orchid discovery in the last century.
This weekend don’t miss the opportunity to relax with beer, wine, and cocktails among the orchids at special happy hours. You can also receive free consultations from orchid experts. The happy hours will take place March 23–25 from 4 p.m.–7 p.m.
In addition, you’ll likely end the show wanting to buy orchids or orchid-related merchandise, so make sure to pass by the Orchid Marketplace open Saturday and Sunday. If you want a particular orchid on display then the Post-Orchid Show Plant Sale let’s you buy some of the orchids on display during the show at a greatly reduced price on Thursday, March 30.
The Orchid Show runs until March 26 at the Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake Cook Rd. Glencoe, IL. The show is open everyday from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Tickets for nonmember adults are $12 and $10 for nonmember seniors and children between 3–12.
