Sure, you can give your significant other a dozen roses for Valentine’s Day, but why not take them to see over 10,000 orchids at the Chicago Botanic Garden’s Orchid Show?
The Orchid Show will take place in the warm Regenstein Center Greenhouses and Galleries of the Chicago Botanic Garden. Visitors will be welcomed by colorful arches of orchids along with orchids wrapped around trees, columns, and suspended from structures. This is one outing where you do not want to leave your camera at home.
New this year will be Concert with Orchids where 2015 South by Southwest breakout artist The Accidentals will be performing their music during the show on Thursday, Feb. 18 from 6 p.m.–8 p.m. If you can’t make it to the performance you can still catch great classical, flamenco, and Native American music with the show’s Morning Music with Orchids program.
For those who are looking for a more educational experience don’t miss out on the many orchid classes. Learn how to grow orchids indoors, how to photograph them, how to use them for meditation, how to find the right pot for your orchid, and even how to make homemade vanilla ice cream from the the vanilla orchid during the show.
In addition, you’ll likely end the show wanting to buy orchids or orchid-related merchandise if you have orchids at home so make sure to pass by the Orchid Marketplace open every Saturday and Sunday while the show is taking place. If you want a particular orchid on display then the Post-Orchid Show Plant Sale let’s you buy some of the orchids that were on display during the show at a greatly reduced price on Thursday, March 17.
The Orchid Show runs from Feb. 13–March 13 at the Chicago Botanic Garden located at 1000 Lake Cook Rd. Glencoe, IL. For tickets and more information visit chicagobotanic.org/orchid.
