Navy Pier is Due for a Makeover

Navy Pier is about to become an even more popular Chicago tourist attraction with a new makeover in recognition of the pier’s 100th anniversary coming up in 2016. Even though Navy Pier had a $225 million overhaul only 16 years ago, pier officials want to make it more of an architectural showpiece to house the variety of attractions now offered there. They plan to revamp the current marketplace atmosphere to emphasize a classier, more aesthetic polish that will better compliment the combination of Lake Michigan and the impressive Chicago skyline.

The goal of the Navy Pier renovation project is to maintain its status as a popular tourist attraction while also making it into more of a refined cultural center that exemplifies what Chicago has to offer. However, Pier officials don’t want to take away the fun atmosphere or make it so slick or sophisticated that it isn’t still universally enjoyable. Some ideas that the remodeling teams are looking to incorporate include water features and more green spaces to better tie into nearby parks and accentuate the natural Lake Michigan surroundings. More artistic features will also be present, with moving sculptures and interactive light elements. Navy Pier’s 100th anniversary makeover is sure to exhibit a fresh look that will solidify it as Illinois’ top tourist attraction.

Who is Creating the New Navy Pier?

Navy Pier officials have organized a contest for the best designers and architects to compete for their ideas to be implemented in the project known as “The Centennial Vision.” Jones Lang LaSalle real estate firm is at the helm of the project, organizing the competitors and narrowing down finalists. The impressive collection of architects and planners vying for a chance to be a part of the Navy Pier makeover include MacArthur Foundation genius grant recipients and accomplished architects and designers of major metropolitan buildings and parks. The judges have now narrowed it down to five finalists whose designs are due January 24 and will be exhibited to the public starting February 2. Pier officials are scheduled to announce a winning team by mid-February 2012.
