Central West End
Overview
Much like its name implies, the Central West End is an eclectic neighborhood west of Downtown snuggled between St. Louis University and Forest Park, boasting some of the city's top local eats, boutiques and galleries. The area is undergoing growth currently, but don't let the new storefronts and facades fool you--it's engrained with St. Louis history, also. With a half-dozen historical buildings, including T.S. Eliot's boyhood home, The Eliot House, and a former residence of playwright Tennessee Williams, Fullerton's Westminster Place, coupled with multiple homes designed by famed St. Louis architects Barnett, Haynes and Barnett, the neighborhood has just as much to offer aesthetically as it does culturally.
Shopping
The strip on Maryland Plaza is dotted with designer stores such as Adriano Goldschmied and one-of-a-kind boutiques like Mezzanine, which showcases up-and-coming works from female fashion's cutting edge. Beyond clothing, a slew of shops like 3D-art-cum-furniture store Millea Furnishings and more traditional retailers like Rothschilds Antiques and Home Furnishings would make for an excellent outing to update the drab living room.
Dining/Nightlife
The intersection of Maryland and North Euclid avenues is a four-corners starting point for great edibles and nightlife, with sushi-restaurant/club The Drunken Fish combining both needs into one venue. Bar Italia serves to satisfy any elegant Italian food cravings, with its spacious porch serving as the primary dining location in the summertime. Those looking for a quick bite should stop by Pickles Deli on North Euclid Ave., since its large-mouth sandwiches can quell even the most severe shopping-induced hunger. Only a few clubs inhabit the area, including Club Viva!, an internationally themed hotspot that offers regional music on different days of the week.
Culture & Attractions
The Central West End is home to ten art galleries, such as the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, free to the public, on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis. Other various single artist or private galleries with art for sale, like The Atrium Gallery are nearby. Another stop where you can admire beauty, even if you can't take it home, is the century-old New Cathedral Bascilica of St. Louis, featuring a window by famous glass makers Tiffany and Co. and mosaics which took more than 50 years to complete.
The Low Down
The Central West End is fairly sedate during the day, but at dusk, the resaurants bulge with people and pay parking lots are abundant and cheap. Try seeing a site or shopping in the late afternoon, then hit one of the many restaurants and bars at night to get enjoyment from this eccentric up-and-coming neighborhood.
