A Slice of St. Louis

Pizza in St. Louis is more than thin crust and Provel cheese.

Despite what you may have heard, St. Louis is not a one-pizza town.  From our notorious ultra-thin crust with Provel cheese to deep-dish pies, and from standard if-it-ain't-broke-don't-fix-it ingredients to gourmet toppings, you'll find it all at these locally-owned pizza places.

Quintessential St. Louis: St. Louis Secrets

St. Louis is full of hidden treasures. Here are two destinations worth investigating: The historic Chase Park Plaza (212 N. Kingshighway, 314-633-3000), originally built in the 1920s and restored about 10 years ago, is a treasure trove of memories.

In fact, the hotel has a room dedicated to a collection of historic photos, old menus, and hotel memorabilia. Photos display celebrity guests who stayed at the hotel including Frank Sinatra, Mick Jagger, and even the Three Stooges. Hand-painted murals depict various modes of transportation from the 1920s and 30s, while menus show popular food and cocktails of the times.

Fun Fact: St. Louis Union Station sits atop a honeycomb of caves that provided natural refrigeration for breweries in the 1800s.

The Whispering Arch at St. Louis Union Station (1820 Market St., 314- 421-6655) is another of St. Louis’s best-kept secrets. Check out the entrance to the Grand Hall which is surrounded by stained glass windows and you’ll find it. Stand on one side and whisper into the arch wall and the person on the other side will hear you.

Randy and Jason Sklar's St. Louis

Editor's Note: Randy and Jason Sklar, accomplished comedians and identical twins, first made it big with Cheap Seats, an ESPN series about offbeat sports. They are hilarious as small town deputies in the new film Wild Hogs, and their sports comedy The Comebacks opens on March 23.  The Sklar brothers took a break from their busy film schedule to talk with me about their favorite places in St. Louis.
