Points of Interest in St. Louis

Interesting places to visit in St. Louis include sites that are both historical and entertaining.

 

The mounds at Cahokia Mounds (618-346-5160, 30 Ramey St., Collinsville) were part of a pre-Columbian city-the largest one north of Mexico. Stand atop Monk's Mound and tour an indoor replica of the ancient city. Admission is free; suggested donation of $1-$2.

Jefferson Barracks (314-544-4714; 533 Grand Road) was a U.S. Army post from 1826-1946. It now offers educational displays like the Powder Magazine, the Old Ordnance Room, and other exhibits. Guided tours, educational programs, and special events are presented. Visitor Center open Wednesday-Sunday; Park open daily. Fees vary for exhibits.

See replicas of Lewis & Clark's boats at the Lewis & Clark Boat House & Nature Center (636-947-3199, 1050 Riverside Dr., St. Charles). There are exhibits relating to the Discovery Expedition and the Missouri River ecosystem, plus a gift shop full of fascinating and educational toys, and employees dressed in period costume.

The Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center (618-251-5811, Hartford) is a replica of Camp River DuBois where Lewis & Clark, with the Corps of Discovery, spent 5 months prior to their journey. A new museum displays a replica of the keelboat the Corps used, plus information on the men and their lives, and a dramatic film. Admission is free; open Wednesday-Sunday.

Missouri's legislature met in the stately buildings of Missouri's First State Capitol (636-940-3322; 200 S. Main St.) from 1821-1826. The buildings have been restored to their original appearance. Admission $1.50-$2.50; hours vary seasonally.

For over 75 years, locals and visitors have enjoyed Ted Drewes Frozen Custard (314-481-2653, 6726 Chippewa at Jameison and 314-352-7376, 4224 S. Grand). The frozen custard "concrete" is a favorite, as are the sundaes, which come in a multitude of variations. The location on Chippewa is open February through December; the location on South Grand is open during the summer months only. Open daily at 11 a.m.; closing times vary.
