Shop Till You Drop

St. Louis has lots of great neighborhood shopping areas. Plan your tour of St. Louis shops with our guide to specialty stores, boutiques, and shopping malls

The Central West End is a cosmopolitan area of appealing restaurants, boutiques with interesting, hard-to-find items, and prestigious homes. It's an easy neighborhood to tour on foot-streets and buildings are scaled to pedestrians rather than automobile traffic, so walking to your destination is a pleasure. Antique lovers will delight in the dozens of stores found along Cherokee Street in the Cherokee-Lemp Historic District, just south of downtown St. Louis. Dubbed "Antique Row", this thoroughfare is anything but one-dimensional, as it also hosts a number of shops that carry clothing, books, art and other collectibles. Located on Delmar Blvd. in University City, the Loop is a funky part of town where college students, artists, and musicians congregate due to the proximity of Washington University, the Symphony Music School, and the Center of Contemporary Arts. You may hear a street musician or two while you window shop. Many boutiques and specialty shops dot this bohemian boulevard, including new and vintage clothiers, jewelry stores, home furnishers, gift shops and music stores with unparalleled new and used CD and vinyl record collections. Take a break at a sidewalk café, restaurant or coffee shop, and all that walking and shopping allows you to splurge on ice cream for dessert. Website: www.ucityloop.com

The Market Place, a collection of style-conscious shops in Ladue, is filled with establishments that carry everything from traditional European clothing to flirty lingerie. Its stone- and brick-fronted stores and cafes make you feel you've left the Midwest and arrived in a prosperous European village.

The prominent central location of the Saint Louis Galleria (314-863-6633, Clayton & Brentwood) welcomes shoppers from all directions. Flanked by multiple department stores, the Galleria features many of the shops you might expect and many you don't, including Aveda, Bare Escentuals, Pottery Barn Kids, Restoration Hardware and the recent addition of Urban Outfitters.
