Traditional Seafood or Sushi?

Delicious seafood and sushi are easy to find, even in the heart of the Midwest . Try one of these restaurants found throughout the St. Louis metro area.

St. Louis Fish Market (314-621-4612, 901 N. First) isn't a market at all, but a chic restaurant with highly polished tables and deep leather booths inside the Embassy Suites Hotel. Subdued jazz and dim lighting along with a subtly nautical decor bring to mind an upscale seaport dining room. The Crab Spinach Swiss Parmesan Artichoke dip with fried pita triangles is a satisfying, full-flavored appetizer; the crab cakes are choice, and are complimented by both cilantro basil pesto and corn jalapeño salsa. A full raw bar/sushi bar is offered for both lunch and dinner. For dessert, try the deeply comforting Warm Apple Betty, a huge portion of dense apple cake with vanilla bean ice cream and hot caramel sauce.

Drunken Fish (1 Maryland Plaza, 314-362-4222; 639 Westport Plaza, 314-275-8300; and 612 North 2 nd St. , 314-241-9595), a contemporary sushi bar and lounge, has three locations in the metro area. They feature local DJ's and Karaoke throughout the week. The large menu includes Specialty Rolls, Sashimi and a full Japanese menu including Yaki Udon and Soba dishes. You'll also find many varieties of sushi and makimono rolls with a long list of sake drinks and martinis. A young, hip crowd enjoys house, jungle, and techno music every evening.

If you're looking for choice, fresh seafood, try Mike Shannon's Steaks & Seafood Restaurant (314-421-1540, 620 Market St .). Located mere blocks from Busch Stadium, Shannon 's serves fresh seafood and award-winning, tender-aged steak. Of course you can also order delicious pasta and finish off with a tempting gourmet dessert. Mike's love of sports—Cardinals baseball in particular—can be seen in the 900 photos of sports legends that adorn the walls. The restaurant tends to get busy before and after games on nights when the Cardinals are in town, especially in the more casual bar area. On Fridays and Saturdays, stick around for “Live at Shannon's,” Mike's live broadcast featuring post-game interviews of coaches, managers and players of both teams.

At Landry's Seafood House (Union Station, 314-231-4040) shrimp and oysters headline the appetizer selection while toppings like lump crab and fried chicken make for delicious salads. Succulent seafood of all types can be enjoyed on the outdoor patio overlooking Union Station's lake.
