St. Louis Pizza
Author: Anne Makeever, Jennifer R. Rolf, and Alecia Warren
St. Louis-style pizza is thin and crisp, usually cut into squares, and topped with provel cheese. It's not the only game in town though – other types of pizza are just as easy to find. Check out our guide to the best pizza in St. Louis .
Sample a slice of the “real” St. Louis at Rigazzi's (4945 Daggett, 314-772-4900). A long-time favorite for casual dinners on The Hill, it serves pizza (its St. Louis-style pizza was voted one of the USA 's best pizzas by Bon Appetit Magazine) with its famous “frozen fishbowl” – a huge goblet of ice cold beer.

At Guido's Pizzeria & Tapas ( 5046 Shaw Avenue , 314-771-4900), delicious pizza and Italian staples are offered. The owners came here from Madrid and established smaller pizza restaurants around town before they fell in love with their current location on Shaw Avenue . Guido's extensive hours of operation (seven days a week) and convenient location adjacent to I-44 make it the perfect stop after a day at the nearby Missouri Botanical Garden or following a game at the new Busch Stadium.
Balducci's Winefest ( 12527 Bennington Pl. , 314-576-5024) is a tucked-away restaurant in the West Port area of St. Louis with hearty Italian fare and house-bottled wine. More like a wine grotto than anything else, the dining room is decorated to celebrate the harvesting of the grape and all that that entails. If you've not yet tried the local version of thin crust pizza, do so here. These pies are quintessentially St. Louis . Other menu favorites include white bean chili, cannelloni and lasagna.
Farotto's Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria ( 9525 Manchester Rd. , 314-962-0048) is a long-time favorite with local residents. In addition to St. Louis style pizza, the menu offers a large selection of pastas, plus several entrée and sandwich choices.

A family favorite, Dewey's Pizza ( 124 North Kirkwood Road , 314-821-7474) offers pizza with a light thin crust and a heap of toppings in a trendy atmosphere. Although the menu includes original salads and massive calzones, most popular are - of course - the pizzas. Choose between your favorite toppings or from Dewey's menu of specialty pizzas. The restaurant also brings in coffee and tea from Kaldi's, the coffee and tea source preferred by many locals.

The pizza at Vito's ( 3515 Lindell Blvd. , 314-534-VITO) makes a perfect pre-theatre or pre-concert dinner, given the restaurant's proximity to the Fox, Powell Hall, Jazz St. Louis, and The Sheldon. There are interesting pasta dishes and appetizers, but the main attraction is the pizza. If you like thick crust, order Sicilian style pizza.
