Eads became a rich man working at the bottom of the river salvaging cargo and steamboats themselves. Eads built the first ironclads on the Mississippi River during the Civil War. After the war, he overcame many engineering and man-made obstacles to build the bridge at St. Louis that still bears his name. He deepened the Mississippi River delta channels, making New Orleans accessible to larger sea-going ships and greatly increasing her trade and prosperity. The event is free.
