April 30-May 2 at the Touhill marks the first appearance in St. Louis of Armitage Gone! Dance, the brainchild of Karole Armitage, whom Vanity Fair once dubbed “the punk ballerina.” Armitage danced for ballet genius George Balanchine and modern maverick Merce Cunningham, choreographed for filmmakers Merchant and Ivory, and made music videos for Michael Jackson and Madonna. Back in the States after 15 years in Europe, she now has her own company and creates contemporary dance with a classical heartbeat: fierce, pure, stark and beautiful.
