Stone Hill Winery, established in 1847, was once the second-largest winery in the United States. Prohibition destroyed Missouri's once-vital viniculture industry, however, and the winery was abandoned. In 1965, Jim and Betty Held purchased Stone Hill and began working hard to restore it to its former glory. In 2007, Stone Hill produced 240,000 gallons of award-winning wine, made from French-American hybrid grapes such as Vidal, Chardonel, and Vignoles.
At Stone Hill Winery, guests can take a guided tour of the historic underground cellars, then enjoy a wine tasting in one of the winery's three tasting rooms. Afterward, it's on to the Vintage Restaurant, where guests can enjoy an array of German culinary delights, as well as steaks and other American standards.
In addition to sampling some culinary treats and wonderful wines, visitors can also take a tour of the vineyard to see what exactly goes into every bottle. And don't think kids are excluded, since Stone Hill also makes a variety of bottled juices that are just as delicious as their alcoholic counterparts.
