Sweet Dreams
Seeking to satisfy that sweet tooth while you're in town? Chocoholics can get their fix at Bailey's Chocolate Bar (314-241-8100, M4;D7). Located in Lafayette Square, the Chocolate Bar is the scene of many decadent desserts and tasty truffles, and the perfect place to wrap up a romantic evening or to meet friends. Crown Candy Kitchen (314-621-9650, M4;B7) is a St. Louis institution that has been serving up homemade chocolate and other varieties of candy by the scoopful for more than 90 years. Nothing says gourmet chocolate like Bissinger's (See p. 45 for locations). This maker of handcrafted chocolates has been a part of the St. Loius landscape since the late 19th century, offering sweet delicacies to tantalize the taste buds of the serious candy connoisseur. Watch and sing along as luscious fudge of all varieties is made right before your eyes at The Fudgery (314-231-1901, M2;C1), located in historic Union Station. Then taste a sample and take some home to enjoy later.
Foot Patrol
St. Louis has many trails, pathways and events that beckon you to get up and go ... for a walk. Forest Park's (M4;B4) main trail features a dual path that allows bikes and skaters to roll along the asphalt while those on foot can tread on a softer surface. The park's Kennedy Forest boasts a hiking trail that bird lovers will adore. The Spirit of St. Louis Marathon and Family Fitness Weekend (314-727-0800) offers fun for the whole family with children's events and a 5K run/walk on April 8th in Forest Park, and a marathon, half-marathon, and marathon relay on April 9th at Soldier's Memorial downtown (M2;C3) The River Des Peres Greenway (M5;D3) on the south side of town is a recently enhanced four-mile bike and pedestrian trail that weaves along River Des Peres and connects with Christy Park. Looking to get away from it all and take in nature in a more secluded area? Castlewood State Park (636-227-4433, M1;C3) has more than 15 miles of scenic trails that lead hikers up hills and along the bluffs of the Meramec River.
