Crystal Springs Quarry

With clear springs winding throughout the site, this course, built on an old rock quarry, offers a challenge for players of all skill levels.  While out on the links don't be surprised to see deer and water fowl in the federally protected wetlands and natural woods.  12163 Prichard Farm Rd., 314-344-4448.

Annbriar

Designers Hurdzen and Fry transformed flat alfalfa fields and deep creek ravines into a dramatic and challenging course, complete with framing sycamore trees, a 100-year-old smokehouse, and an artificial waterfall.  1524 Birdie Lane, Waterloo, Illinois, 618-939-4553.

Quail Creek

One of the most difficult courses in the St. Louis area provides natural streams, rolling hills, and Bermuda fairways all surrounded by the wooded grounds of the popular Suson Park.  This Hale Irwin-designed course has hosted several national tournaments.  6022 Wells Rd., 314-487-1988.
