Ukrainian Village/East Village
Overview
This close-to-downtown neighborhood has surged in popularity and retail/dining options for tourists and locals alike. Formerly heavily populated by a strong Eastern European contingent, it's more diverse now, but you'll still find a wealth of Polish (and other) delis and more. These days, high-end restaurateurs are beginning to call the area home, and the tell-tale coffee shops popping up on each block portend more gentrification before there's less.
Shopping
The only large chain store you'll find around here is the rather new Dominick's grocery store at the intersection of Chicago and Damen avenues. Otherwise, it's a mish-mash of dollar stores and more high-end boutiques.
Dining/Nightlife
A place to go for Eastern European culinary items, the Village is these days home to an ever-growing restaurant population, including West Town Tavern, Take Five and Green Zebra. A number of new nightlife options are situated amongst the restaurants.
Culture & Attractions
The neighborhood itself is the attraction here, as visitors will get a feel for both the modern and more classic, gritty side of Chicago.
The Low Down
This formerly slightly run-down pocket of the city is seeing explosive growth these days, with more residential units popping up all the time. The main strip here is pretty much situated along Chicago Avenue with some more up and down Ashland Avenue. It's a safe neighborhood on the main streets, but a little more sketchy off the strip. Don't be afraid; be aware.
