Overview
Constituting some of the most expensive real estate in the country, the Gold Coast neighborhood sits right in the heart of downtown Chicago. Stately mansions, designer boutiques, cafes, and a lively nightlife scene are all part of the attractions here. A number of the city's top residential high rises are here, mostly on Lake Shore Drive. The area got its start as a stomping ground for the well-to-do in 1885, when dry goods magnate Potter Palmer built an actual castle here and began the stream of elites moving into the neighborhood. The Gold Coast is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Shopping
Unique bookstores and high-end designer shops are punctuated by large, upscale shops like Barney's New York and Prada. Seekers of things urban and contemporary will find their designer goods here, as will more casual clothes seekers--visit the new flagship Burton store for snowboarding gear and urban-influenced clothing.
Dining/Nightlife
One of the city's most raucous late-night areas, the Gold Coast is filled with everything from the loud, brash college bars that line Division Street to ultra-high-end lounges and clubs peppered throughout the heart of this busy district, otherwise known as the "Viagara Triangle." At its epicenter on Rush Street you'll find a mix of classic steakhouses and plush, modern digs.
Culture & Attractions
Fine art and antique galleries abound here, and The Museum of Contemporary Art makes its home here, too. A number of theaters and throughout-the-year events keep things busy; for quiet time, book lovers visit the Newberry Library.
The Low Down
If you don't want any part of a "spring break adult-style" atmosphere, skip the Gold Coast anytime past the evening. Revelers are known to get loud and roam the streets, and the top earners that party here love to drive their high-end cars and motorcycles through nightly bumper-to-bumper traffic. It's a real scene; one worth checking out if you're not in too much of a hurry.
