West Loop
Overview
A former warehouse district known for supplying edible goods to much of the city from its environs, the West Loop has climbed way up the neighborhood dining scale with restaurant after restaurant lining up along West Randolph Street. Nightlife options ranging in intensity are also available here, as are at least a couple of "adult" shopping options. Shoppers should head someplace else, though there are a couple of small stores selling specialty items on the main strip here. Off the main street, you'll find Chicago's meatpacking District. It's constitutes by a line-up of well-regarded restaurants and nightclubs situated along Fulton Street. Watch out for the delivery trucks, as much of Chicago's stored edibles are still warehoused here, as in the days of old.
Shopping
You can get the basics here, including a brand new big-box grocery store and drugstores. Actual shopping forays are limited to a few specialty shops that exist for people with very certain needs like, say, having an antique cash register repaired.
Dining/Nightlife
West Randolph Street is the backbone of the West Loop and is filled with restaurants--a veritable restaurant row. The strip is so well-known for its assortment of food that it hosts its own “Taste of Randolph” for a weekend in June. There are so many restaurants, it seems like there are four or five valets on each side of every block.
Culture & Attractions
It sounds commercial, but there is a residential element to the West Loop, mostly in the form of loft residences placed in renovated buildings and over the top of commercial enterprises. It's a good launching point when it comes to exploring the Loop itself, the heart of the Chicago business world. Also not far away from here, sports fans will find the United Center, home to the Chicago Bulls, nearby.
The Down Low
If you're headed to the West Loop, it's likely you're getting ready to eat at one of the many top restaurants lined up here. Cuisines from around the world are represented by establishments serving fare ranging from Mexican to contemporary Japanese to fine-dining French service.
