Libertyville
Overview
A modern suburb with a home town atmosphere, Libertyville is a fairly tightly knit community that is a commercial draw for the surrounding area. Its population has vaulted upwards over the last half-century, and shows no sign of abating. There is also a real spirit of historic preservation, which shows in the overall visual character of downtown Libertyville.
Shopping
History is on display in the physical fabric of Libertyville, as well as in the many antique shops and gift stores that reside downtown. Boutique clothing stores and gourmet food/wine shops complete the picture. It's definitely not over-commercial here, but there is plenty of specialty shopping to do. Most are sitated along Milwaukee Avenue, Peterson/Buckley Road, and Route 176.
Dining/Nightlife
For a relatively small village, Libertyville has dining options ranging from bar food to high-end steakhouses, like The Tavern (locals adore this wine-happy, modern steakhouse). There are more than 80 restaurants and taverns, as well as late-night and live music options. Also, Libertyville's eateries and clubs are smoke-free.
Culture & Attractions
The Libertyville-Mundelein Historical Society holds court at the Ansel B. Cook House, a library turned historical landmark. The Victorian-themed property offers a ready look at local history. Also, top Chicago architect David Adler left his estate to the village following his death in 1949. Today, it serves as The David Adler Cultural Center, a historical and cultural locally with a range of multi-disciplinary programming.
The Low Down
It's a decent drive on at least three different expressways to get to this hamlet, but it's worth the drive--just don't plan on having wine with dinner, then coming back to the city unless you have a designated driver. Come in the afternoon to check out the shopping and stay into the evening for the wine, food and music.
