Lake Forest
Overview
Home to Lake Forest College, this community was kind of built around the school, and that commitment to education continues today. Lake Forest also plays an important role in Chicago sports, being home to the Chicago Bears training facility, Halas Hall. Part of the affluent "North Shore," Lake Forest also doesn't want for entertaining pasttimes, from shopping to dining to relaxing at an outdoor cafe on a tree-lined street. It's also the hometown of actor Vince Vaughn.
Shopping
The Metra train line brings visitors straight into the heart of Lake Forest and all around the station you'll find shops of varying stripes, though most are boutique in style.
Dining/Nightlife
Like most of the Chicago metro area, Lake Forest has its share of well-run eateries and classic nightlife. Fine-dining is on display here at spots like Bank Lane Bistro, while you can also find more affordable fare. Another stand-out is Lovell's of Lake Forest, where the son of former astronaut, Capt. James Lovell, Jr., holds court in the kitchen and the dining room.
Culture & Attractions
The history of the North Shore is laid bare at the Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Historical Society and there are also a number of natural areas and state parks in the area.
The Low Down
Like all five "North Shore" communities, Lake Forest has a unique appeal thanks to the comprehensive nature of its commercial scene. The suburban-going Metra train is the best way to get here given the ongoing traffic woes that make auto transport to here a trying experience, at best.
