Frankfort
Overview
Pioneered in 1855 by German settlers, this quaint town is revered as the "Jewel of the South Suburbs." In 2003, it was awarded the Southland's Reader's Choice award for "Best Community" in one of the fastest growing counties in Illinois. This suburb has maintained its heritage over the years with prairie-style architecture in its historical downtown district and surrounding residential neighborhoods. By today's standards, Frankfort has experienced an influx in population, as well as, commercial and industrial businesses, transforming this one-time farmland into a modern, up-and-coming area.
Shopping
Frankfort's historical downtown district is known for its wide variety of specialty shops. Window shoppers and collectors alike will enjoy the numerous village antique shops offering everything from country-home furnishings to unique artifacts and rare paintings.
Dining/Nightlife
Frankfort is legendary for its many Italian and Chinese establishments. After the one-time notorious Aurelio's Pizzeria burned down (along with the village's ever-famous Bierstube restaurant), the family-style establishment relocated to better accommodations at its new location on Lincoln Hwy. The Rising Sun on LaGrange Rd. is also in constant service with its traditional Kung Pow and egg roll dishes.
Culture & Attractions
Frankfort's downtown area is the village's largest tourist attraction. Aside from its local shops, the town's main recreation area, Breidert Green, houses most of the outdoor community events - including the summer's Concert on the Green festival, Winter on the Green with a chili cookout and ice sculpture demonstration, and the annual tree-lighting ceremonies in December.
The Low Down
Frankfort is a quiet village on the verge of a cultural boom. Its specialty stores and eclectic eateries instill the suburb's small town appeal. Discount Records on Lincoln Hwy. houses a wide variety of the old, new and used at reduced prices. Enrico's on LaGrange Rd. continues its 30-yr. reign over the community with its Northern Italian dishes and cozy atmosphere. The Trolley Barn mall in historical downtown Frankfort houses some of the finest antique stores, as well as, one of the best ice cream parlors in town.
