Edgewater

Overview

A North Side neighborhood full of densely packed residential units, the eastern edge of this area is bordered by Lake Michigan, and it's surrounded by some of Chicago's most interesting (if still evolving) neighborhoods--Rogers Park, Lincoln Square, and Uptown. A center of the GLBT community in Chicago, it was originally built as a high-toned suburb and the architectural influences of that time are visible here and there among the apartment and conominium buildings. It's the home of Loyola University Chicago and rehabilitation is underway here at a rapid pace.

Shopping

Most of the retail action here occurs along a busy, people-filled stretch of Argyle Street, known to some as "Little Saigon." Shops are filled with tourist-friendly merchandise. You'll also find unique, boutique-style shops, high-end stationary, and antiques galore.

Dining/Nightlife

Authentic Vietnamese and Southeast Asian cuisine is on display daily in this area that's home to many immigrants of the same ethnicities. There is also a wealth of Middle Eastern cuisine options available to the ethnic-leaning diner.

Culture & Attractions

A real melting pot of cultures and races, a stroll through this neighborhood might include a sighting of women in traditional African dress, or long-time Chicago families out for a stroll.To the north lies Devon Avenue, a destination spot for those interested in a touch of the Indian and Pakistani cultures that thrive along Devon. Ethnic diversity on par with that seen anywhere in the world is the attraction here--and the great eats.

The Down Low

Though it's seven miles north of downtown, Edgewater is highly accessible, on the El Red Line, or by automobile using Lake Shore Drive. Give yourself time to mill around, as this isn't a neighborhood that gives its secrets up easily.
