Museum of Contemporary Art
Author: Molly Fergus
The sculpture of a car and pop-up camper diving into the cement patio outside the MCA says all visitors need to know about Chicago's contribution to the modern art scene: This isn't a typical art gallery. From its stark white interior to its Puck Cafe to its enviro-friendly exhibits, the MCA has been a testament to 21st century art and culture since it opened in 1967.
Musuem of Contemporary Art Exhibits
The theater takes centerstage on the museum's street level. The auditorium regularly hosts up-and-coming performers, and year round shows run the gamut from cello operas to dance troupes to multimedia productions. Plus, it's an affordable evening out: Tickets cost anywhere from $20 to $40, with student prices starting at $10 a piece. See the performance section on the website for specific show times and ticket prices.
The third floor's selection is limited, with only three exhibition rooms open, but what's on display is worth a peek.
Dining at the MCA
Puck Café: The second floor's Puck Café dishes out Mediterranean and Asian-inspired platters with the help of acclaimed chef Wolfgang Puck. Main lunch courses, such as rigatoni Bolognese and roasted halibut, range in price from $10-$15. Outdoor seating is available in the sculpture garden when the weather's mild; call (312) 397-4034 for reservations.
