ARTEahora: Chicago's First Latin Art Fair
Author: Dana Felmly
ARTEhora, Chicago's first Latin art fair, will showcase the work of a number of inflential Latin American artists and will feature lectures and book signings from artists, curators, and art dealers from around the country and the world.
Premiering in Chicago on April 20, ARTEahora is a festival of cultural events and special exhibitions celebrating Latin American art and its impact on the current international art world.
The River East Art Center is host to most of the event’s activities, starting with the kickoff party on Sunday, April 20, from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. The highlight of the evening will be the ESHGH, a performance described as a “highly innovative, eccentric and esoteric work.”
Next on the schedule is a lecture on the famed artist Roberto Matta to be held Wednesday, April 23 at 6:30 p.m. at Instituto Cervantes, 31 W. Ohio. Professor Elisabeth Goizueta of Boston College will reflect on Matta’s historical significance, while fine art dealer Thomas Monahan discusses his long-time professional relationship with the artist. The lecture is free, but seating is limited.
Of Matta’s paintings, seven will be offered for purchase, and a display of 10 years of contemporary Cuban photography will also be exhibited. Works from more than 80 artists will be on display, 35 whom will be present at the show.
The opening night party will be held on Thursday, April 24, at 5:30 p.m. at the River East Art Center. Tickets are $25.
On Friday, April 25, artist and architect Gretchen Minnhaar will be at River East Art Center at 2:00 p.m. to sign her new book, “Gretchen Minnhaar.” “The book is about her philosophy and her work,” says Aldo Castillo, one of the curators of the event and owner of the Aldo Castillo Gallery. “Most of her work concentrates on perspective. What she does is to make us look at things from different perspectives. She gets you to look at objects from another angle.”
On Saturday, Alexander Slato, associate director of the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, California, will be discussing the art of collecting Latin American art. The lecture is free and will begin at 2:00 p.m.
The final lecture is “10 years of Contemporary Cuban Photography - 1997– 2007” by Art Critic Michael Weinstein. The free lecture will be held at 2:00 p.m. in River East Art Center.
Please RSVP to all programs and activities to RSVP@artaldo.com, or 312.337.2536.
