Hubbard Street Dance Company will offer a week of performances at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance in Millennium Park, HSDC’s primary Chicago performance venue, in each of the four seasons - a Fall Series October 9-12, 2008; a Winter Series December 3-7, 2008; a Spring Series April 1-5, 2009; and a Summer Series June 4-7, 2009 - for a total of four separate programs throughout the year. Previously, the company performed in Chicago only in the spring, then added a fall series two years ago.

“The 2008-09 season marks the beginning of a new era for Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. By presenting four distinct programs in separate weeks at the Harris Theater in Millennium Park, we hope to deepen our patron relationships and further our investment in the cultural life of Chicago.”

HSDC Artistic Director Jim Vincent announced initial programming (subject to change) for each of the four series:

2008 Fall Series: a world premiere created for HSDC by Toru Shimazaki, who created Bardo for the company in 2006, plus the return of Marguerite Donlon’s Strokes Through The Tail (created for HSDC in 2005) and Ohad Naharin’s Minus 16 (premiered by HSDC in 2000)

2008 Winter Series: the company premiere of Walking Mad by Johan Inger, artistic director of Sweden’s Cullberg Ballet, set to Ravel’s “Bolero”; a revised version of Vincent’s second work for HSDC, Uniformity; Doug Varone’s The Constant Shift of Pulse, which has its company premiere April 1 during HSDC’s 2008 Spring Series; and another work to be announced

2009 Spring Series: three world premieres—the second for the company by Jorma Elo, who created From All Sides for HSDC in 2007; HSDC dancer Alejandro Cerrudo’s third work for HSDC; and Vincent’s fourth work for the company, set to music by Benjamin Britten; as well as the return of Daniel Ezralow’s SF/LB (created for HSDC in 2004) and Associate Artistic Director Lucas Crandall’s Gimme (created for HSDC in 2005)

2009 Summer Series: the company premiere of William Forsythe’s Quintett; the return of Nacho Duato’s Gnawa (created for HSDC in 2005) and Cerrudo’s Extremely Close, which receives its world premiere March 26, the opening night of HSDC’s 2008 Spring Series at the Harris; and another work to be announced

Said Vincent, “We are collaborating with the most important choreographers of today’s dance scene, bringing the finest art and talent to our city from around the world, and expanding our repertoire of exclusive work that Chicago audiences will experience before anyone else in the country.”

Additional Chicago performances during the 2008–09 season will include the company’s sixth collaboration with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra April 11, 2009, featuring Vincent’s new work set to Britten, with conductor Xian Zhang. HSDC’s annual choreographic workshop “Inside/Out” will occur in late spring 2009.
