What this communal bike ride is about: Friends and families gather to remember bicyclists and pedestrians killed in traffic.
When: 9:30 a.m. Oct. 19
Where: North Avenue pedestrian bridge in Lincoln Park. The ride portion of the event will extend 15 miles from North Avenue to Soldier Field and back. The walk will be a five-mile stretch through Lincoln Park.
Why: The Dick Herron Memorial Bike and Walk honors bicyclists and pedestrians killed in traffic. The donation-based event funds Herron-Chicagoland Bicycle Federation scholarships that will help young people pay for textbooks, tuition and educational costs.
