Event Details:
In an effort to celebrate their two new exhibitions, "Myth Symbol Image," and "Fingerprint DNA: A Portrait of the Arab-American Family," the International Museum of Surgical Science is hosting a public reception for the artists from 5pm-8pm on Friday, August 1st.
"Myth Symbol Image" is the latest work from Laura Kurtenbach in which anatomical illustrations are superimposed over Christian stained-glass windows. Don't think the Da Vinci Code, though, as this exhibit focuses on the juxtaposition of the mortality of the body and the ephemeral and everlasting nature of the spirit, even going so far as to replicate the media itself by being printed on plexiglass to mimic the windows themselves.
"Fingerprint DNA" is a work from Geraldine Ondrizek that takes the DNA sequences of her Arab in-laws, prints them using a process called dye sublimation, and then mounts the prints on looms to call to mind the Arab craft of rug-making. The similarities between the patterns in the rugs and the patterns of the DNA are multi-faceted, and this exhibition calls to mind traditions and lineage on a grand scale.
These two exhibits are the most recent in the Museum's "Anatomy in the Gallery" series, which focuses on medically themed contemporary art.
The exhibits run from August 1-October 17, and the museum is open Tuesdays - Saturdays, 10am-4pm. Admission is $9 for adults, $5 for students and seniors, and admission is free on Tuesdays. For more information, visit the International Museum of Surgical Science.
