More about Museum of Science and Industry...

Short Description:

The Museum of Science and Industry, one of the most beloved and visited museums in the world, has origins that are tied to two great World's Fairs and to civic spirit and imagination of Chicago businessman Julius Rosenwald.

Full Details:

Julius Rosenwald, then Chairman of Sears Roebuck & Company, was inspired by a 1911 visit with his son to the Deutches Museum in Munich. He returned to Chicago determined to create America's first center for "industrial enlightenment," a vehicle for public science education.

With the help of other Midwest business leaders, Rosenwald restored and converted the Palace of Fine Arts, the last remaining major structure from the 1893 World's Fair, into a new type of American museum - where visitors could interact with the exhibits, not just view displays and artifacts.

In 1933, the Museum of Science and Industry opened to the public, at the same time as the Century of Progress Exposition.

Today, the Museum of Science and Industry continues to pave the way through scientific endeavors, new exhibits, and scientific lectures. The museum itself caters to all ages with informative, interactive displays and  hands-on exhibits.

The museum is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. In honor of the celebration, now until September 1, children 11 and under receive free general admission. Special exhibits still require an additional fee. Then from September 2through 30, general admission will be free for everyone on weekdays, Monday through Friday. Also, tickets can now be purchased online instead of having to wait in line.

Museum hours now through September 1:

9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday

11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sundays

Museum hours after September 1:

9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Saturday

11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays
