Sky-high fun all around the city of Chicago is yours for the taking; now go get it!
CHICAGO AIR AND WATER SHOW...Come to the waterfront and experience the sights and sounds of the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels Flight Demonstration Squadron, the U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, and more at the 50th annual Chicago Air and Water Show. Festivities begin Friday, Aug. 15, at 3 p.m. with opening ceremonies and a special performance by the Blue Angels and Golden Knights. After, there will be a free concert at the North Avenue Beach Boat House. Festivities continue Saturday and Sunday with the water show portion beginning at 9 a.m. each day and the air portion beginning at 11 a.m.; both end at 4 p.m. The show is free, but arrive a little early to find a good spot.
MOVIES IN THE PARK...As the sun goes down, the silver screen lights up all over Chicago. Throughout the summer, the Chicago Park District presents Movies in the Park. Visitors are welcome to bring blankets and picnic baskets to enjoy a free night of fellowship and film in varying neighborhood parks throughout the city. Shows start at dusk, but arrive on the early side to guarantee a seat. Features range from classic favorites like "Shall We Dance" to contemporary hits like "Transformers." VIVA: LATIN MUSIC FESTIVAL...What better place to have this outstanding free festival than the city with one of the largest Latino populations outside L.A.! Come down to Grant Park Aug. 23-24 to enjoy a variety of Latin-inspired food from around the globe, fascinating ethnic dances and artwork.
CULTURE FESTS...Chicago Jazz Fest: Aug. 28-31. Millennium Park hosts this two-day extravaganza of top-shelf jazz music. It includes well-known jazz artists Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman and a slew of Chicago-based jazz musicians.
Chicago Reggae Fest: Aug. 23. Ah, Jamaica! Head to the intersection of Lake Street and Ashland Avenue (Union Park) to experience an entire day of reggae, beginning at noon and lasting well into the evening. See and hear artists like Bunny Wailer and Queen Omega.
Oktoberfest Chicago: Sept. 26-27. If you love beer, brats and German bands, you will want to attend the 8th annual Oktoberfest Chicago. Even if you are not of German ancestry, you will have a blast at this tradition-minded festival in Lakeview. Free admission.
