Author: Elizabeth Seymour
Take a look at what to do in and around Chicago this summer!
GET SANDY...The shores of Lake Michigan offer plenty of great beaches. Some of the city's most conveniant--and popular--include North Avenue Beach, which is is a haven for volleyball players and is also home to Castaways Bar & Grill. The rooftop bar is the best spot to simultaneously people watch and sunbathe. Just down the lakefront path, Oak Street Beach is another sandy expanse with skyscrapers for a stunning backdrop. Farther north, Montrose Park boasts a bird sanctuary and popular fishing pier in addition to the usual beachfront offerings.
GET MOVING...Bikes and boats are among the most sought-after vehicles during a Chicago summer. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to join in the fun. Bike Chicago has rental locations at Navy Pier, North Avenue Beach and beyond. Bobby's Bike Hike also rents bikes, plus offers multiple bike tours. If the lakefront path just isn't close enough to the water for you, Charter Boat Chicago offers sport fishing and private yacht excursions. Prefer to sail? Try Lakeshore Sail Charters.
GET FESTIVE...Festivals are the backbone of a Chicago summer, and these are a small sampling of some of the most popular. The 59th Annual Old Town Art Fair takes place June 14-15. It's the oldest juried outdoor art fair of its kind and typically hosts an estimated 50,000 art lovers. The requested donation is $7. Then there's the legendary Tast of Chicago from June 27-July 6. Try cuisine from more than 70 restaurants, check out activities and entertainment for all ages, and don't miss free concerts from Stevie Wonder, Plain White T's, Joss Stone and many more. On July 26 it's time for Venetian Night, a boat parade and fireworks display. The boat parade begins at 8:30p.m., followed by fireworks. Approximately 35 boats will float in the parade this year.
