Summer Pleasures
You can usually count on amazing weather in August and September in Chicago. Probably the biggest summer delight is the outdoor festival, and there's certainly something for everyone. Here's what is going on...
Chicago Outdoor Film Festival
Grab blankets and picnic baskets and head over to Grant Park for classic films featuring the likes of Paul Newman, Cary Grant, Robert Redford, Burt Landcaster and Julie Andrews. Get there around 6 or 7 p.m. to get a good seat. Local filmmakers’ works will also be shown before the main event. Every Tuesday through August 28 in Butler Field, Grant Park. Free.
Chicago Air & Water Show
The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and U.S. Army Parachute Team Golden Knights blast into the city for the country’s largest free show on August 18-19. Stuff a picnic basket and head out early to the lakefront to catch all the action from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For the preview show, head to the lakefront around noon on August 17.
Caribbean Festival
A host of Caribbean entertainers will be on tap as well as local American acts featuring hip-hop, R&B and gospel at this annual event taking place Sept. 7-9. Food vendors will be set up serving African, Caribbean and Latin cuisine. Union Park, 1501 W. Randolph St. Noon-10 p.m. $10 for adults; $5 for children and seniors. 312-427-0266.
Chicago Jazz Festival
Award-winning jazz legend Herbie Hancock kicks off the festival taking place during Labor Day weekend. His event (with tickets ranging from $16 to $46) occurs at the Chicago Symphony Center on August 30, and then moves to Grant Park for the remaining three days. From August 31 to Sept. 2, the free shows take place on three stages.
Northalsted Market Days
The colorful, two-day Lakeview event—which has a large GLBT attendance—features live music on several stages, food vendors from the area’s top local eateries, arts and crafts, and more. During and after the festival, guests are known to keep the party going by spilling into the many bars and restaurants in the area. On Halsted from Belmont to Addison streets. 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. August 11-12. $6 donation benefits the Northalsted Area Merchants Association.
