CLASSIC CHICAGO

Guides

Navy Pier Chicago

Navy Pier equals entertainment in Chicago, no matter the season. With more than 8.6 million visitors a year, Navy Pier Chicago is the Midwest’s number-one tourist destination.

The Pier has 50 acres to explore and is overflowing with museums, restaurants, shops, rides and more. We dare you to get bored at Navy Pier; Chicago’s own entertainment oasis on Lake Michigan.

The Magnificent Mile

Stretching from the Chicago River to Oak Street, Chicago's Magnificent Mile has the perfect balance of history and modernity. It's the epitome of urban activities, where visitors get a chance to shop, eat, and play while experiencing some of the city’s greatest landmarks.

Skydeck Chicago - Willis Tower

Towering at 1,450 feet above ground (110 stories), Willis Tower's Skydeck Chicago is the highest observatory in Chicago. Since its creation in 1973, Skydeck Chicago averages about 1.5 million visitors each year. On a clear day, you can view 40-50 miles straight out and see the edge of our neighbors Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin.

Willis Tower is currently the tallest building in the Western hemisphere and the third tallest in the world.

Walking Tours

Structured guided tours giving you a view into the soul of Chicago 's architecture and history? Check. Free-flowing self-guided tours letting you see the city at your leisure? Check. From the big and sweeping to the small and concise, different tour outlets give you a vast array of options for learning about and exploring the city. Here's what we found:

Chicago Shops-Chicago Souvenirs

Shopping for a piece of Chicago to take home with you? Chicago souvenirs are vast and varied. From the sidewalks of the Magnificent Mile to the avenues of the city's neighborhoods, the perfect city souvenirs to take home from Chicago await.

St. Patrick's Day: Chicago-Style

Irishman Mike Austin recounts the eccentricities of St. Patrick's Day in Chicago.

Millennium Park - Art & Architecture

No visit to downtown Chicago would be complete without a stop at Millennium Park. Among Millennium Park’s many attractions are Gehry's flower-shaped Jay Pritzker Pavilion, London artist Anish Kapoor's jelly bean-shaped Cloud Gate sculpture (a.k.a. “The Bean”), and Barcelona artist Jaume Plensa's twin towers of illuminated glass—the Crown Fountain.

Millennium Park - Dining

Given the centralized location of Millennium Park in downtown Chicago, the dining options are varied and plentiful. You can stay inside the park or venture out onto Michigan Avenue and beyond to find a tasty meal when it comes to Millennium Park dining.

Navy Pier Restaurants

Navy Pier is jam packed with restaurants that will satisfy the copious amount of diners in search of quality food. It is almost impossible to leave the pier with an empty stomach. So, loosen up your belt buckle because this colorful lakeside carnival will fill you up with fresh seafood, home-style southern cooking, cheezborgers, sticky sweet candy or fried dough.

Navy Pier: History

The stories of Navy Pier and Chicago go hand-in-hand, and with almost a hundred years of history under its belt, Navy Pier has proven its longevity. Though the only boats you see moving on the water nowadays are tour boats, the Pier has stayed true to at least one of its original goals by becoming one of the most sought-after destinations in Chicago.

Navy Pier: Nightlife & Music

If Navy Pier were any more packed with nightlife opportunities, it'd be its own city instead of near downtown Chicago. The Pier is a year-round night-time destination for having live music, a beer garden, a huge performance stage, the Navy Pier IMAX, and fireworks. You can't really ask for much more in this outdoor oasis, except cloud-free weather and some good friends.

Navy Pier: Attractions

The Navy Pier IMAX Theater is only one option for high-intensity entertainment at Navy Pier: try the Ferris wheel and the rest of the rides at Pier Park.

Have a ball at one of the two kid-friendly museums, take a leisurely or fast-paced boat ride, or watch one of the award-winning performances--all on the same pier!

Bank of America Chicago Marathon

Thirty-one years ago, the city of Chicago was floored by the number of runners and supporters at the first Chicago Marathon. This year, on October 11, 2009, tens of thousands of runners will once again compete in hopes to break a world record and win the newly named Bank of America Chicago Marathon.

Navy Pier Chicago-IMAX Theater

Located in the Family Pavilion at Navy Pier, the colossal IMAX Theater is a monster of a movie theater. This Chicago IMAX experience takes guests on a wild adventure into a completely different world. Grab some popcorn and dive into an entire 6-story performance that will have viewers glued to their seats at the IMAX Theater.

Willis Tower - Dining In the Area

Willis Tower is not only famous for its top height in Chicago, but its location for top dining is just as eminent.

Restaurants within walking distance of the Willis Tower may offer opulence or casual experiences, but one thing's for sure, these food finds won't leave guests unsatisfied.

Corpo Dance Company Presents B-Sides

Fri, Mar 21 - Sat, Mar 29

According to the traditional definition:
B-side songs are released on the same record as a single to provide extra "value for money". One type of material commonly released in this way was a different version (e.g., instrumental, a cappella, live, acoustic, remixed version or in another language/text) of the A-side.

Christopher M. McCray, Artistic Director, takes his own spin on the old definition.

B-sides is a dance concert in two acts. The first act will contain original choreography by McCray featuring music from Bjork, Wax Tailor, and Nirvana. The second act features McCray’s previously performed choreography “remixed” by local and international choreographers including Valerie Alpert, Elijah Gibson, Ray Mercer, Kirby Reed, and Lisa Johnson-Willingham. The pieces will be welded together with the help of a local Radio DJ who will introduce each to the audience as though it is a live broadcast on an FM radio station, a time when 45’s were hot and payola was the rule.

B-Sides will be held at the Ruth Page Center for the Performing Arts - 1016 N Dearborn Ave., Chicago, IL 60610. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door and can be purchased by calling 773-472-1921 or by clicking here.

Sofia Partida
Sofia Partida’s story begins with her parents and the decision her father, Norberto Partida, made in the 1930’s to show his support for the Cesar Chavez labor movement blossoming in the farmlands of California. Leaving his hometown of Amatit án, Mexico, Norberto and his immediate family set forth to establish campos in Woodland and Yuba City, California. The campos movement consisted of organized farming camps that provided legal protections and educational services to Mexican immigrant farm workers.

Norberto’s efforts provided a safe haven for hundreds of Mexican families and assisted them with entry into the United States. While Norberto managed the administration of the farms and labor aspects of the campos, Sofia’s mother, Elisa, provided the trappings of the Mexican homeland, including daily home-cooked meals for hundreds of men, women and children.

Sofia, the 11th of 11 children, was born into this nurturing atmosphere, and remembers her childhood as “a Mexican experience.” She goes on to note, “It was a wonderful, family environment. My siblings and I were raised with a full understanding and affinity for our Mexican heritage and culture. I didn’t even realize I wasn’t actually in Mexico, until it came time for me to go to school.”

Eight years ago, Norberto passed away prompting Sofia to rediscover her heritage and to reclaim her history as a Partida. She journeyed back to Amatit án to discover her father’s past and, in the process, reconnect with her Mexican roots. Sofia discovered that, like her father before her, “Tequila runs in my veins.” Under the tutelage of Norberto’s brother, Enrique, Sofia began filling in the missing part of her family history.

Uncle Enrique tutored Sofia in the planting and nurturing of the blue agave plants from which the premium Partida Tequilas are created. He acquainted her with the Partida family’s special time-tested distillation processes.

During Sofia’s immersion in the Tequila culture, she realized she had found both a personal and professional calling. With the Partida family’s enthusiastic endorsement and support, Sofia decided to bring Partida Tequila to the United States.

Sofia’s goal is to do more than simply introduce America to Partida Tequila. She strives to honor the proud legacy of the Partidas by introducing new friends to the “real” Mexico; a place of honest pride, rich culture, and precious traditions. A true Tequila Legacy.

About Chelsea Handler:

Chelsea recently broke into the world of  male-dominated late-night talk shows with her new E! Entertainment series, “Chelsea Lately,” which premiered on July 16.   Airing weeknights at 11:30 p.m., the series provides Chelsea with the perfect showcase for what she does best: comment on pop culture and  entertainment news while interacting with the public.  The daily program offers a tongue-in-cheek look at entertainment news, celebrity truths and rumors that just won't die, and other hot topics of the day.  Bringing refreshing new energy to the late night arena, “Chelsea Lately” is an authentic and hilarious commentary on the celebrity culture around us.

As one of the nation’s fastest-rising female stand-ups, Chelsea has performed to sold-out audiences at venues and festivals everywhere, including the Montreal Comedy Festival and the HBO Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen.  Her comedy intermixes fearless honesty, ironic riffs and self-deprecations with no shortage of material.  Last March, her first half-hour stand-up special, airing on  Comedy Central, was a ratings hit.  She has made several appearances on “The Tonight Show,” guest-hosted on “The View” and has appeared on “Late Night with David Letterman.”

Shattered Globe Theatre: A Taste of Honey

Sun, May 18 - Sat, Jul 05

Shattered Globe Theatre will present Shelagh Delaney’s “A Taste of Honey,” directed by Jeremy Wechsler.  Set in 1950s Manchester, England, Delaney’s poignant and comic play tells the story of Jo, a shy adolescent chafing against the constraints of her working class life and the demands of her selfish, irresponsible mother Helen. When Helen abandons Jo to take up with a much younger man, Jo falls prey to the advances of an itinerant sailor and is left pregnant and alone. Determined not to be undone by her difficult circumstances, she creates her own sort of family with gay art student Geoffrey, who moves into Jo’s flat to help her prepare for the birth of her baby. The two settle into tentative peace and happiness—until Helen’s unexpected reappearance threatens to throw Jo’s life back into upheaval.

The play was a revolutionary piece in British theatre, confronting taboo social issues from a woman’s perspective, with working class characters that are realistic, resilient and refuse to be bound my circumstance.   Grammar school dropout Delaney was only 17 years old when she started writing “A Taste of Honey,” her first play and a work that would propel her to literary superstardom by the time she reached her twenties. The production runs about two hours with one intermission.

Millennium Park: Grant Park Music Festival

Wed, Jun 11 - Sat, Aug 16

Chicago’s Grant Park Music Festival - the Grammy®-nominated Grant Park Orchestra and the award-winning Grant Park Chorus led by Principal Conductor Carlos Kalmar and Chorus Director Christopher Bell - will celebrate its 74th annual season with a wide ranging series of classical music concerts and special events at the state-of-the-art Frank Gehry-designed Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park, and in other select city locations, June 11 – August 16, 2008. The concerts, which are free and open to the public, will generally take place on Wednesday and Friday evenings at 6:30 p.m., and Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m.

“The Grant Park Music Festival experience is unparalleled,” says Artistic and General Director James W. Palermo.  “We’re set in one of the world’s best outdoor summer concert venues – the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park.  Add to that the thrill of hearing the great classics of the symphonic repertory with our amazing sound system, the Chicago skyline in full view, performed by legendary guest artists and Carlos Kalmar with our own world-class Grant Park Orchestra and Chorus – and all for free.  That’s an experience that’s hard to beat.  The Grant Park Music Festival has become not only the hottest ticket in town, but one of Chicago’s vital artistic treasures, an irreplaceable part of our lives each summer.”

A number of new programs have been implemented this season to accommodate increased demand for reserved seating and to enhance the overall concert-going experience. “Wednesday, Friday and Saturday Select Series” memberships (similar to the 2007 “8’s Series” membership and priced this year at only $80) feature guaranteed access to the reserved seating area for eight Wednesday, Friday, or Saturday concerts at which members will receive usher-guided access to some of the Pavilion’s best available seats 10 minutes prior to each concert. This series augments the traditional Grant Park Music Festival membership program, which provides guaranteed seating for all 30 concerts. Traditional memberships are now on sale, but have become extremely popular, sometimes selling quickly.  Wednesday, Friday and Saturday Select Series memberships are an alternative for those interested in either attending on a particular day of the week or looking for an extremely affordable membership option.  Another addition to the Festival this season is the “PlayBack” programming, where on three selected evenings, specially chosen guest artists return to the stage immediately following concerts to present bonus, intimate solo or chamber performances of works of their choosing.

Season Highlights

The 2008 Festival’s impressive season opens with 2008 Grammy® Award-winning violinist James Ehnes performing the haunting strains of Barber’s Violin Concerto (for which he recently won the Grammy® for Best Instrumental Soloist) and Brahms’ 2nd Symphony, June 11. The upcoming season also includes the superstar concert violinist Pinchas Zukerman, making his Festival and Millennium Park debut July 13 in a concert presented in collaboration with the Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the founding of Israel; and the dynamic young virtuoso Leila Josefowitz performing American composer John Adams’ recent work Dharma at Big Sur, July 16.  Ukrainian born Israeli violinist and Isaac Stern protegé Vadim Gluzman performs Mendelssohn’s popular Violin Concerto, August 6.

Nights like no other at Millennium Park include Take a Friend to the Orchestra, June 18 & 21. Inspired by a national internet phenomenon of the same name, regular Grant Park Music Festival concertgoers are encouraged to invite a friend who has never been to an orchestra concert to experience popular favorites by Wagner, Mozart, Debussy, Rossini, Barber, and Respighi in the relaxed, laid-back setting of Millennium Park. Then, the magic of cinema will be combined with the lush sounds of the Grant Park Orchestra in the U.S. Premiere of A Throw of Dice, a stunningly beautiful Indian silent film from 1929 presented with a new symphonic score composed by award-winning DJ/multi-instrumentalist Nitin Sawhney (who will perform on keyboards) and conducted by Stephen Hussey in one screening only, July 30.

The Grant Park Music Festival will present a selection of concerts with a dose of international flair, beginning with popular Catalan vocalist Maria Del Mar Bonet, June 20. Concerts by the Orchestra and Chorus will celebrate a sampling of pieces from Russia, including Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor, and Rachmaninoff’s choral spectacular The Bells, based on Edgar Allen Poe’s poem of the same name, July 23 & 25. Finally, the works of some of Chicago’s best and brightest Latin American composers – including Ricardo Lorenz, Gustavo Leone, Elbio Rodriguez Barilari, and Osvaldo Golijov– will be showcased under the direction of Guest Conductor Giancarlo Guerrero, August 1 & 2.

Tribute will be paid to two very different musical giants, beginning with “Gershwin’s Greatest Hits,” sung by some of Broadway’s most popular talents, July 18 & 19; with the Friday evening concert also the main attraction of the Festival’s seventh annual benefit gala, Divertimento. Then fittingly on Venetian Night, July 26, the dashing young Italian tenor sensation Vittorio Grigolo makes his Chicago debut honoring his mentor, teacher, and friend, the late, great Luciano Pavarotti with a variety of opera arias, Neapolitan songs, and new pop opera tunes written especially for him.

Throughout the summer, the combined forces of the Grant Park Orchestra and Chorus will perform monumental choral works such as Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis (with soloists Erin Wall, Anita Krause, James Taylor and Nathan Berg) June 13 & 14; A German Requiem, June 25 with soprano Karina Gauvin; and Sibelius’ The Captive Queen and Szymanowski’s Stabat Mater (conducted by Hannu Lintu with soloists Jonita Lattimore, Susan Platts, and Quinn Kelsey), July 9 & 11.

The Festival will celebrate our nation’s birthday by showcasing America’s classical music traditions. On July 2 & 5, Bill McGlaughlin, host of the nationally-syndicated Exploring Music program, heard locally on 98.7 WFMT, will take audiences on an orchestral journey through 125 years of American classical music, beginning in the post Civil War era and ending with the music of today.  Highlighted are traditional works by Chadwick, Gershwin and Bernstein, to the mavericks of today, including John Adams and Chicago composers.  The performances are scheduled to be taped live for later nationally syndicated broadcast.  On July 3, Christopher Bell and the Grant Park Orchestra return to the Petrillo Music Shell for one of Chicago’s favorite concerts, Independence Eve at Grant Park. Later in the month, on July 29 & 31, the Grant Park Chorus moves front and center in “a cappella” concerts celebrating music “Made in America,” performing works by Hovhaness, Corigliano, Lauridsen, Copland, Golijov, Barber, and Sametz.

Beloved pianist Valentina Lisitsa returns, performing Grieg’s Piano Concerto, August 8 & 9. On both evenings, she returns to the stage for PlayBack performances of one of classical music’s most popular works – Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata.  And lastly, the closing week of the 2008 season will offer audiences a variety of astounding operatic selections, including Act 1 of Wagner’s Die Walküre (with soloists Nancy Gustafson, Torsten Kerl and Kristinn Sigmundson) August 13, and a program of Great Opera Choruses, featuring Carlos Kalmar and the Grant Park Orchestra and Chorus, performing favorites from such operas as The Marriage of Figaro, Die Meistersinger, Fidelio, The Flying Dutchman, Khovantchina, Boris Godunov, Carmen, Pagliacci, Manon Lescaut, Turnadot, Nabucco, and Aida, August 15 & 16.  Renato Balsadonna of the Royal Opera Covent Garden will act as Guest Chorus Director for these season closing performances.

The Silk Road Theatre Project: Durango

Thu, May 01 - Sun, Jun 15

Silk Road Theatre Project Artistic Director Jamil Khoury and Executive Director Malik Gillani announce the Midwest Premiere of Durango by Julia Cho . The production, directed by Carlos Murillo, will run May 1- June 15, 2008, in Pierce Hall at The Historic Chicago Temple Building, 77 W. Washington St, Chicago. Press opening is Saturday, May 10, 2008, at 4:00 p.m.

To the outside world, the Lee boys look like the perfect Korean American sons: Isaac plans to be a doctor and his younger brother, Jimmy, is a champion swimmer with a bright future. But when their widowed father, Boo-Seng, decides to take them on a road trip to Durango, Colorado, all three find themselves grappling with old memories and unhealed wounds. As tempers flare and secrets break open, the difference between who they are and who they’ve pretended to be threatens to tear the family apart.

“Few experiences are more quintessentially American than the family road trip, an almost ritualized expression of our independence and mobility, acted out against a broad swath of mostly unsettled territory,” says Artistic Director Jamil Khoury.  “And it is within the American road trip, traversing desert terrains from Arizona to Durango, Colorado, that Julia Cho frames this smart, funny, sometimes painful tale of a Korean born father and his two American born sons.  Durango is a 21st century play about honesty, deception, and choice.  Whether engaging it for the first time or the tenth, it evokes gasps of recognition.  Not only does it recall memories, but it brings to light so much that we love and hate about traveling with our families…and much, much more.”

The World Premiere of Po' Boy Tango

By Kenneth Lin
January 7 – February 15, 2009

A celebration of the human spirit and the joy of cooking, Po' Boy Tango tells the story of Richie Po, a Chinese immigrant who turns to his estranged friend Gloria to help him recreate his mother's "Great Banquet."  Despite the challenges of shark fin soup, duck po' boy sandwiches and underlying cultural tensions, Richie and Gloria find common ground through their shared humor and the blending of traditional Taiwanese cuisine and African-American "Soul Food."  Helped by lessons from Po Mama’s television cooking show, the two discover a deeper understanding of food, culture and the nature of friendship.  Po’ Boy Tango comes to the Northlight stage for a full production after a successful workshop and reading as a part of the Northlight Interplay series—the third production to make such a transition (Lady, Better Late).

Lookingglass Theatre Company, in association with Actors Gymnasium, announces the triumphant return of Lookingglass Alice, July 2-August 31, 2008, at its home located inside Chicago's historic Water Tower Water Works, 821 N. Michigan Ave. at Pearson.  Lookingglass Alice returns to Chicago for a limited run after enjoying its world premiere production in 2006, followed by an east coast tour in 2007 and a sold-out run last summer at Lookingglass.

With a juggling Mad Hatter, a precariously balancing Humpty Dumpty, and a bumbling Knight who invents his way into Alice’s heart, Lookingglass Alice revisits the stories that inspired the founding of Lookingglass Theatre Company twenty years ago.  Adapted by Ensemble Member and Artistic Director David Catlin from Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, Lookingglass Alice is a muscular, acrobatic, and dizzyingly playful show for all ages.  This Alice falls, floats, flies, defies gravity and the rules of logic during her wonderland journey through the looking glass to become a queen.

Shattered Globe Theatre: The Glass Menagerie

Thu, Sep 04 - Sun, Nov 02

“The Glass Menagerie” was Williams's first successful play, and is accounted by many to be a biographical work about his life, the characters and story mimicking his own more closely than any of his other works. Inspired by real events, Williams employs themes of illusion and escape to depict the delicacy of family life in this “memory play.” “The Glass Menagerie” is a memory play—both its style and its content are shaped and inspired by memory. Most importantly. the story is told because of the inflexible grip it has on the narrator’s memory. Among the most prominent and urgent themes of this play is the difficulty the characters have in accepting and relating to reality.  Each member of the Wingfield family is unable to overcome this difficulty, and each, as a result, withdraws into a private world of illusion where he or she finds the comfort and meaning that the real world does not seem to offer. “The Glass Menagerie” identifies the conquest of reality by illusion as a huge and growing aspect of the human condition in its time.

Newberry Library - Daniel Burnham in the Phillippines

Mon, Jun 01 - Wed, Jul 15

Daniel Burnham in the Phillippines at the Newberry Library

In the winter of 1904-1905, Chicago architect and future co-author of the Plan of Chicago Daniel Burnham traveled to the Philippines.  He had won a commission from the United States government to develop a new city plan for Manila, the capital of the Philippines, and to create a city plan for a completely new "summer capital," Baguio City, 155 miles to the north of Manila and 5,000 feet above sea level in the mountains of Luzon.  The United States gained possession of the Philippines in 1898 as part of its treaty with Spain at the end of the Spanish American War.  The US government in the Philippines determined to assert its authority over its new colony and hoped that Burnham's plans would set an appropriate imperial and at the same time, progressive, tone.  Burnham eagerly solicited the project and set out for Asia in October 1904.

This show places Burnham's visit to the Philippines in an historical context that reveals several, sometimes conflicting, processes at play.  First, Filipinos nationalists' ongoing struggle for Philippine independence, and second, the American's desire to assert control over its new colony politically, economically, and to some extent, culturally.  The Philippines Burnham encountered, and the plans he created, are the focus of this Spotlight Exhibition.

The Second City - Taming of the Flu

Sun, Dec 06 - Wed, Mar 31

The Second City Mainstage has been at it for 50 years already, and like many other Baby Boomers, it's showing no sign of slowing down. Its 97th Mainstage review, Taming of the Flu, offers no lollipops after this injection of scathing satirical sketch. But you will walk away feeling a whole lot better.

The talented cast cures us of all the things that make us sick to our stomachs with a dose of hilarity: Swine flu, Twitter, health care and those seemingly empty buzzwords like "hope" and "change" don't stand a chance against this comedic remedy.

Showtimes are 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday for $22 and Sunday at 7 p.m. for $22 with shows at 8 and 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday for $27. Call the box office for tickets at 312-337-3992.

iO Theater-Felt

Wed, Jan 27

Felt

Puppets gone bad. That's one way to describe Felt, the improv comedy show featuring all puppets at the iO Theater. This show is not suitable for children, so it's best to leave them at home with reruns of Sesame Street.

These nine puppets perform the best comedic forms created by or inspired by the iO Theater over the years. For example, the puppets may indulge in a Harold, which is long form improv that begins with a simple suggestion from the audience. The absurdity it can lead to is unknown and while it might scare Elmo, you'll find it exciting.

Tickets are $5 and can be bought by calling 773-880-0199 or logging onto TicketWeb. For a complete list of iO shows inside the Del Close Theater, visit the calendar page on iO's Website.

iO Theater-TJ & Dave

Wed, Jan 27

TJ & Dave

Lauded as one of the best two-man improv shows in the country, TJ & Dave go straight for the inane and absurd quirks of human nature in their Wednesday night show at iO Theater.

TJ Jagodowski and Dave Pasquesi are Second City alumni who represent the classic Chicago comedy style with perfect pitch. Some would call them improv heroes. Most would call them funny and not to be missed.

Tickets are $5. The show begins at 11 p.m. in iO's Cabaret Theater. Tickets can be bought at the box office or by calling 773-880-0199. You can also log on to TicketWeb. For a complete list of showings, visit the Cabaret Theater calendar.

iO-The Armando Diaz Experiment

Mon, Feb 08 - Mon, Mar 29

The Armando Diaz Experiment

"The Armando Diaz Experiment"  is the longest running show at Chicago's famed iO Theater in Wrigleyville. It is a riotous journey of long form improvisation that gets its start from one suggestion from the audience followed by a monolgue, which inspires the subsequent hilarity.

The scenes weave together seamlessly and the interspersed monologues tell honest and often hysterical truths that on their own could be a successful show. As far as improv goes, this is it at its most pure, it's most absurd, it's most talented and it's most Chicago form.

The troupe is made up of many of iO's most talented and the line up tends to change week to week. Founded by Adam McKay ("SNL," Anchorman," "Talladega Nights,") Dave Koechner ("Anchorman," "Thank you for Smoking") and of obviously, Armando Diaz who also founded The Magnet Theater in New York City.

"The Armando Diaz Experiment" performs Mondays in the Del Close Theater at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are just $12. Call 773-880-0199 or log onto ticketweb.com to get yours.

The Second City-"The Timeless Tale of New Portsmouth ... A New Musical"

Fri, Feb 12 - Fri, Mar 05

"The Timeless Tale of New Portsmouth ... A New Musical"

A product of the graduates of The Second City Musical Improv Program, "The Timeless Tale of New Portsmouth ... A New Musical" is a an adventure of funny and song and dance made for the high seas.

Set on the docks during the 19th century when steamboats were making waves, this wonderfully scored story introduces us to the quaint habor town of New Portsmouth at the moment when progressive, corporate America barges in to industrialize. Through newfound love, gender confusion and tragedy, all set to music (and jokes), "New Portsmouth" is a cruise of wit and irreverance you don't want to miss.

"The Timeless Tale of New Portsmouth ... A New Musical" performs Friday nights at 7:30 inside Donny's Skybox Theatre, 1608 N. Wells now until March 5. Tickets are $12. Call The Second City Box Office at 312-337-3992 or log on to the Website.

The Second City-"Historical Inaccuracies"

Sat, Feb 13 - Sat, Mar 27

Between the two groups you'll find 13 Second City Conservatory graduates as well as sudents of iO, The Annoyance, Upright Citizens Brigade and other famous improv machines. These actors know their stuff.

"Historical Inaccuracies" runs now until March 27 every Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Donny's Skybox Theatre at 1608 N. Wells. Tickets are $12 and can be bought by calling The Second City Box Office.

The Second City-"The Tim and Micah Project: CONTINUE"

Fri, Feb 12 - Fri, Mar 05

"The Tim & Micah Project: CONTINUE"

Quickly becoming the dynamic duo of irreverent Chicago sketch comedy, Tim Soszko and Micah Philbrook bring their brand of structured absurdity brand to Donny's Skybox Theatre in "The Tim & Micah Project: Continue" Fridays at 10:30 p.m.

Unlike conventional sketch comedy shows, The Tim & Micah Project blend each scene together through dance and performance art transitions that TimeOut Chicago called, "a web of scenes straight out of a David Lynch Fantasy."

It's a non-stop experience designed to keep you on the edge of your seat gripping your sides in hysterics. Tickets are $12 and may be purchased by looking onto www.secondcity.com or by calling 312-337-3992.
