There are few cities in the world that rival the architectural muscle of Chicago. From the days just following the Great Chicago Fire in 1871, plans started being laid out to construct a world-class metropolis and leading architects -- including Daniel Burnham, Louis Sullivan, John Root and Dankmar Adler -- began building now iconic structures.
These plans laid the groundwork to establish Chicago as an architectural hub where many styles and schools of thought were born.
Just walking throughout Downtown you see their legacy rising up above you. The Chicago Architecture Foundation offers many tours of various landmark buildings and historic areas. One of the most popular is the guided architectural boat tour, which wends its way along the Chicago River nearby historic buildings.
There are also a number of city-based walking tours to get you up close to the buildings and the architects' legacy. For a real treat, drive or take the El's Green Line out to Oak Park to see some of the greatest works from one of the masters of modern architecture: Frank Lloyd Wright. You can either pay for a guided tour or for a set of headphones and a recording, or you can grab a map from Wright's one-time Prairie style home and studio or simply from the Internet and walk around the neighborhood on your own.
There's hardly a shortage of things to see and as Chicago continues its progress into the 21st century, the buildings keep going up. The race to build the tallest structure in the world began in Chicago with the completion of the Sears Tower. Since then, many others have topped its height, but with the addition of the new Trump International Hotel & Tower -- and the fixture of the building's spire -- Chicago will once again claim the tallest building in the world.
While it's not yet here, the Chicago Spire will add a touch of elegance and panache to Chicago's already gleaming skyline. The Santiago Calatrava-designed building should hopefully begin construction soon.
But just wander throughout Millennium Park to see architectural beauty on a more pedestrian level. And soon the park will connect to the new Renzo Piano-designed Modern Wing of the Art Institute by a sprawling bridge spanning Monroe Street.
Whether you want to pay for guidance or do it on your own, Chicago's architectural offerings are first rate and plentiful.
Chicago is the birthplace of the skyscraper. Among the most well-known skyscrapers is the John Hancock Center, which towers more than 1,127-feet and is 100 stories high - enough aluminum in the building to cover 12 football fields!
One very fast elevator ride to the top and you'll be in one of the world's most expansive and entertaining observatories, home to an open-air skywalk; a sky-high cafe; a free, multimedia tour; and spectacular bird's eye views.
Millennium Park has become Chicago’s biggest main stage attraction. Aligned with Chicago’s emphasis on architectural innovation, Millennium Park, Chicago's 24.5-acre phenomenon, integrates historical significance with contemporary style from a number of international players.
Light-polluted, inland cities such as Chicago don't generally lend themselves to star-gazing and dolphin-spotting. Nature-lovers head to rural hills or beachside towns for such thrills.
But with just a day at the Chicago Museum Campus, visitors can check out Orion's belt, sit in on a dolphin show, and study dinosaur fossils--with just a pleasant, lakeside stroll between each of the Chicago museums housed here.
Woodfield Mall, a top Chicago shopping center, is as large and imposing as a castle, surrounded on five sides with department stores to protect the keep, which is full of shops both standard and uncommon. When you storm it, debit card in hand, instead of being greeted by defenders, you'll find the spacious floors, plush seating areas, and naturally lit atmosphere more inviting than looming. Woodfield has a store for everyone, and is more than just a neighborhood mall, it's a destination.
The city's oldest museum, the Chicago Historical Society, reopened its doors after a multi-million dollar renovation, unveiling not only its new name—The Chicago History Museum—but also a new motto that Chicago history begins here. So trek on up to Lincoln Park and immerse yourself in Chicago's spectacular past.
Visitors and locals alike flock to the Museum of Science and Industry to take in some of their permanent exhibits, as well as new, ground-breaking exhibits that have visitors of all ages excited to learn.
Since opening in 1933, this Chicago museum has grown exponentially; it currently displays 35,000 artifacts and welcomes nearly two million visitors each year. Be sure to check out the brand new "You! The Experience" exhibit, and don't miss out on a tour of U-505, the only German submarine in the United States.
In the northern region of Grant Park, right on Michigan Avenue, lies the Art Institute of Chicago, which houses more than 5,000 years of human artistic expression from all over the world.
The newly opened Modern Wing at the Art Institute of Chicago is home to the museum's expansive contemporary and modern art collections, several public areas, and more! Check out our guide to the Modern Wing at the Art Institue of Chicago.

Public art has come a long way from its cave painting days. Internationally-renowned artists are creating some of the most innovative installations in Chicago for the benefit of the public that's paying for them. There are a slew of new sculptures, like Anish Kapoor's “Cloud Gate” and Magdalena Abakanowicz's “Agora,” in nearby Millennium Park and Grant Park, that are receiving well-deserved attention.
The Chicago Cultural Center is a city landmark for exquisite art, architecture, music, theater, and history.
The most prominent elements of the Cultural Center are the two famous glass domes (including the world’s largest Tiffany dome) that rest atop this “People’s Palace”.
Free art exhibits, renowned performers, and glorious architecture draw a range of people to Chicago’s cultural home.

You can venture out and explore the grounds freely, or take one of the guided tours the city has to offer. Experience Chicago's most famous park in the most detailed way.
Feed your food fancy while you visit the John Hancock Center and the John Hancock Observatory. There are multiple selections to choose from right in the building, or get a breath of air down the Magnificent Mile for plenty of high-end and casual dining selections within walking distance of the John Hancock Center.
The John Hancock Observatory is one of the finest experiences Chicago has to offer. See all of Chicago--and why not a little of Michigan, Wisconsin and Indiana while you’re up there?
You will tower over Chicago’s Magnificent Mile at a dizzying 1,030 feet. The height really is a minor sacrifice for a sensational view. Here's nothing more breath-taking than watching the sunset across the city from the 94th floor. If a visit to the John Hancock Observatory isn’t on your bucket list, grab a pen and write it in!

Guest artist Theaster Gates, in collaboration with the Yamaguchi Institute will host an exhibition celebrating ritualized space and ceremony. The installation, consisting of a Japanese style table and dinnerware, and a ceremonial tea house, is constructed of reclaimed wood. Theaster and the Black Monks of Mississippi perform during the April 11, April 25, and May 9th openings.
Tea Shack Songs: a solo exhibition, pays homage to the shotgun houses of the south and the house of tea master, Sen no Rikyu, based on the traditional design of the Samurai house of the Momoyama period. Using thousands of wooden ware boards from the Yamaguchi estate, Theaster will construct the modified tea house and fill it with music, dinner parities and times for reading and reflection.
Yamaguchi's works create unexpected opportunities for visitors openly discuss issues of race, political difference and inequalities of all sorts through the examination of his backgrounds as a Japanese potter, married to a Civil Rights activist from Mississippi.

Jackie Palmer is a social worker who serves as the main caretaker for four men with special needs living together in a group home. While she loves being around to help, she feels increasingly burnt out and thinks it might be time to move on. While Jackie struggles with her decision, we meet four men, each with his own interests, who make the most out of life. Norman works at a donut shop and takes great pride in the enormous ring of keys that hangs from his belt. Barry, who thinks he’s a golf pro, must cope with the devastation of being rejected by his father. Lucien has the energetic mind of a five-year-old and is faced with the daunting task of testifying before the state senate. And Arnold, who loves anything even remotely related to Russia, is the ringleader of the bunch. It’s a touching and fun dramedy about the little things that will make you appreciate everything in life.
