Men's Shopping: Woodfield Mall

Saying that Woodfield is a mall doesn't do it justice. It isn't just a mall, it's a mecca, with more than 300 stores, restaurants, kiosks, and three floors of fun, it'll keep you entertained for more than a day, but what's more important than its sheer scope is that it contains all the essential building blocks for a well-rounded male wardrobe: clothing, fragrance, and health needs acclimated to the modern day warrior-poet, super-dad, twenty-something, and everyone in-between.
Clothing options alone are on the brink of overwhelming, with the mall itself framed by five department stores. Designer clothing outlet Nordstrom anchors the bunch, but don't let the designer part of the description scare you off. If you go halfway through any season, you can get name-brands at double-markdown bargain-bin prices due to the season-swap. Lord & Taylor is notable for their casual collections of hipster brands like Ben Sherman, G-Star Raw and Triple 5 Soul, and also worth a mention for their expansive denim racks, covering the usual suspects like 7 for All Mankind and Citizens of Humanity.
Of course, if denim is your thing, you're not going to have slim-pickin's here. In addition to the department stores, original denim powerhouse Levi's has a store, featuring their "Shrink to Fit" line that, no joke, requires you to get in a bathtub full of warm water and flex up and down to allow the denim to conform to your body. They're supposed to fit like a glove after the regiment with your rubber-ducky, but if that isn't your idea of time well spent, they offer pre-shrunk fits and washes as well. Designer label Guess also has a store that features their moderately priced styles as well as punky bracelets, watches and shirts.
This may all seem like standard mall fare, but there are a few treasures buried in the directory listings as well; Abercrombie up-and-comer Ruehl, intended for the collegiate clique, offers casual clothes with more classic appeal than their flagship Abercrombie and Fitch brand. Chicago's very own Untitled also has a store at Woodfield, which in addition to offering a spectrum of clothes, has harder-to-find small run brands like Modern Amusement and J. Lindeberg as well as designer denim and Creative Recreation kicks. Martin + Osa also has a store, offering prep-down casual clothes at smart prices.
The modern business type may think this is great for weekend wear, but what about suit-fare and dress shirts? Look into Tailor, Needle & Thread, whose standard made-to-measure dress shirts cost under a hundred dollars a piece, for those who are difficult to fit or enjoy the refined features of a snug shirt or custom collar.
The most important part of the outfit, however, may not even be what's seen, but what's smelled. The sense of smell is the most strongly tied to the brain and memory, and as a result, whether meeting the misses or the mistress, the odor you emanate had better not be week-old socks. New York apothecary C.O. Bigelow has your scent and skincare covered with their inexpensive brands of male cologne, offering a different aroma for every mood, in addition to having name-brand male skin-care and shaving lines. Perfume expert Sephora is nothing to scoff at either, with a wall dedicated to men's products, and a huge selection of colognes to compliment your natural bouquet.
If all this clothes shopping and fragrance testing has your testosterone dipping low, try stopping by Field of Dreams to perk it up. They have a vast collection of sports-memorabilia from all teams, including autographed balls, pictures, hats, and even checks from current and past superstars and hall-of-famers.
After your rejuvenation, you can round out your armoire with the finest of accessories. For the CEO, there's Executive Essentials, which offers a selection of writing instruments, desktop furniture, portfolios, and, uncharicteristically enough, Lego pens. The intrepid traveler isn't forgotten either, with Kaehler Travelworks providing high end luggage from all brands, including Tumi carry-ons, Knirps umbrellas and Knomo cases.
As you can see, Woodfield presents a plethora of shopping options, so grab your comfortable shoes, pack your I-90 toll money, and make the commute. It's well worth it.
