Victory Gardens Theater has been around since 1974 and stays true to its mission to develop and produce new plays. Most of its featured plays are written by Chicago-area writers, staying true to its heart of Chicago roots.

The Victory Gardens Theater features many performances that are world-premieres with much emphasis on Chicago based writers.

Since its creation in 1974, 243 plays have been performed in its over 30 seasons with 142 of the plays being world premieres and 151 being written by Chicago authors.

The theater also has its own ensemble which is composed of actors and playwrights which enables those artists to continue to write and perform new plays.

In 2004, VGT bought the historical Biograph Theatre and renovated it into a state-of-the-art facility which opened in 2006. They won a Tony Award in 2001 for Best Regional Theatre.

In keeping with their philosophy of making good theater available to the masses, classes are available for those interested in theater at every level of experience: from the beginning to the seasoned actor.
