Kid-Friendly Chicago Theater 2013 – Upcoming Shows

Looking for family-friendly theatre here in Chicago? Look no further! The following kid-friendly theatre companies are each offering great line-ups of children’s plays for the spring and summer seasons. We’ve compiled a few of our top choice shows for kids to help you find the perfect fit for your whole family!

Emerald City Theatre Company

This long-standing children’s theatre company spreads the wealth of its wonderful family-friendly programming across the city, by offering performances at two separate locations:  the Broadway Playhouse on the Mag Mile, and the Apollo Theater on North Lincoln Avenue. Here’s what’s hitting each location this season:

Dr. Seuss’The Cat in the Hat

At the Apollo Theater, Now – May 19th

At the Broadway Playhouse, June 15th – September 1st

Summary:  The Cat in the Hat is the perfect friend for a boring rainy afternoon. From games and mischief to Thing One and Thing Two, The Cat brings all sorts of trouble to this grey day— but will Sally and her brother be able to explain the mess to Mother? This Dr. Seuss classic leaps onto the stage with chaotic exuberance in this adaptation from the National Theatre in London.

This show was created for children ages 3-6.

The Frog Prince, Continued

At the Apollo Theater, Now – May 25th

Summary:  When "happily ever after" isn’t what he expected, The Frog Prince heads out for a new adventure. While searching for his true amphibian self, he meets witches from Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Hansel and Gretel, and Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother. This musical tour through the enchanted forest is an Emerald City world premiere.

This show was created for children ages 5-10.

Chicago Children’s Theatre

Back in the days when Chicago theatre for kids was far harder to find, The Chicago Children’s Theatre stepped up to help fill the void, and became one of the first companies to offer a full year of professional theater programming focused on family-friendly content. This season, we have our eyes set on their new production,The Elephant and The Whale.

The Elephant and The Whale

April 10th – May 26th

Summary:  A spectacle in miniature, The Elephant and The Whale is an epic tale that invites audiences of all ages to discover the majesty of the largest animals on our planet, and a story of friendship conquering all obstacles. After each performance, audiences will have the chance to interact with the artists and get an up close look at the set, props, puppets and mechanical apparatuses.

Chicago Kids Company

This non-profit theater company aims to offer kids a chance to enjoy the magical world of Chicago theatre, with colorful costumes and sets, professional actors, goofy characters, and content designed to please all ages. We’re especially excited about the following two upcoming productions:

Chicken Little

At the Stahl Family Theater, Now – May 31st

At the Wright College Theater, July 12th – August 2nd

Summary:  The Sky is Falling! The Sky is Falling! Join Chicken Little and her friends --Ducky Lucky, Goosey Loosey, Turkey Lurkey and others-- as she journeys to tell The King the news! Don’t miss CKC’s newest show! Brand new for 2013!

This show was created for ages 2-12.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears

At the Beverly Arts Center, April 16th – August 16th

Summary:  This hilarious musical is "JUST RIGHT!" This show is based on the classic story of a young girl who ventures into the woods and stumbles on a cute house with 3 bowls of porridge, 3 chairs, and 3 beds. A CKC classic! Don't miss out!
