Mike Shannon's St. Louis

Mike Shannon's St. Louis

Editor's Note: Renowned for both his baseball glory days with the Cardinals and a successful broadcasting career, St. Louis native Mike Shannon is a favorite with local sports fans.  His self-named restaurant is the place to be on Friday nights after home games, when Mike broadcasts his live sports talk show.

9 A.M.

I’m a big history buff, so in the morning I would check out the Missouri History Museum (Forest Park, 314-746-4599). I enjoy learning about past wars and heroic veterans who helped make this country what it is today. It’s a great way to spend a morning, and there are always new exhibits to see, like Flight City: St. Louis Takes to the Air, a current exhibit about aviation in St. Louis.

10 A.M.

I also enjoy fishing, so spending a morning on the Mississippi River is one of my favorite things to do. I’ve been fishing in everything from a johnboat to a 50-foot cruiser, and with everyone from my mechanic to the Governor of Missouri.

NOON

It’s lunch time, and I would go to Mike Shannon’s Steak & Seafood (620 Market St., 314-421-1540), of course. It’s the best place for me to catch up with the movers and shakers of our city. I almost always order our soup du jour and the seafood special of the day.

2 P.M.

For an afternoon of fun, there’s nothing like a visit to the casinos. I really like to play the games of chance, and in the middle of the day, there are no lines at the black jack or poker tables!

6 P.M.

For dinner, you guessed it—I’d head back to Mike Shannon’s. When the weather is nice, I like to sit on the terrace in the evenings for dinner. I’d order a big juicy steak, a bottle of good red wine, and enjoy the best view of the city, the Gateway Arch (St. Louis Riverfront, 314-982- 1410), and the new Busch Stadium (700 Clark St., 314-345-9600).

7 P.M.

After dinner, if the Cardinals are in town, then the stadium is the place to be in St. Louis. If there’s no game, I might take in a movie at the Moolah Theater & Lounge (3821 Lindell, 314-446-6806) or the Chase Park Plaza Cinemas (212 N. Kingshighway, 314-367-2385) with a big tub of popcorn.

The Missouri History Museum is a thorough look at St. Louis history and culture, from the time it was just a village up until its present day glory.

Named after a legendary broadcaster, Mike Shannon's has a reputation for offering some of the finest steaks in town.

Gateway Arch
707 N. First St., St. Louis, MO 63102

Since 1965, when construction workers placed the final piece of steel at the apex of the Gateway Arch, over 25 million sightseers have journeyed to its top. Also known as the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, the Arch stands as the 630-foot tall gatekeeper to the Midwest, making it the tallest national monument in the U.S. , and the 4 th most-visited tourist attraction in the world. Its juxtaposition between the Mississippi River and the historical city of St. Louis provides sightseers with much more than a bit of vertigo at journey's end. Whether you pop into a museum, patronize one of the unique eateries at river's edge, or indulge in souvenirs, a visit to the Gateway Arch grounds offers anyone and everyone a memorable experience and a bit of American history.
