Ready to Wear
Fedoras, Homburgs, derbies, oh my! Levine Hats (314-231-3359, 1416 Washington Ave.) is a timeless purveyor of men’s accessories, pushing fads to the wayside, and focusing on a lasting trend—classic craftsmanship. Men may be from Mars and women may be from Venus, but thanks to Mister Guy men’s and women’s stores (314-692-2003, 9831 Clayton Rd. or 314-991-5262, 9817 Clayton Rd.) we can give the impression that we all hail from Planet Style. Are you and your personal style in need of some pampering? With their charming restaurant and a shoe department fit for Imelda Marcos, Neiman Marcus (314-567-9811, Plaza Frontenac) is a fashionable respite for the weary shopper.
*Writer’s Choice: The youthful, but entirely attainable men’s and women’s fashions at Ziezo (314-725-9602, 6394 Delmar Blvd.) make for a must-stop-shop on the deservedly beaten path that is the Delmar Loop.
Whatcha Get Me?
Holly Golightly once said of Tiffany (314-692-2255, Plaza Frontenac), “Nothing very bad could happen to you there.” Well, nothing worse than maxing-out your credit card, but at least you’d have something beautiful and shiny to remember your bank account by. With an enchanting array of designer stationery and unique gifts, a trip to Vellum (314-909-1640, 120 W. Monroe Ave.) is as mandatory as a stroll through Kirkwood, the charming township where Vellum resides. Need a gift for your sister-in-law’s birthday? Best friend’s house-warming party coming up? Shop Mulberry Tree Home, Décor and Gifts (636-537-5888, 107 Chesterfield Town Centre) for gifts you’ll probably end up keeping for yourself.
*Writer’s Choice: While in St. Louis, browse the superb selection of handmade soaps, home accessories, jewelry, and more at Archetypes (314-862-3989, 28 The Boulevard). If you leave empty-handed, remove the blindfold and go back, silly.
Wherefore Art Thou?
Any St. Louis visit requires a jaunt through downtown Clayton. Shop, sip, dine, and peruse galleries like the Barucci Gallery (314-727-2020, 8101 Maryland Ave.). With roots in museum-quality custom framing, Barucci is a refreshingly accessible gallery that specializes in art glass and original paintings. Also located in Clayton, the Duane Reed Gallery (314-862-2333, 7513 Forsyth Blvd.) is the consummate art gallery. Sophisticated, but not at all pretentious, Duane Reed is what other galleries aspire to be when they grow up. Once upon a time it was a train car factory, but now the Foundry Art Centre (636-255-0270, 520 North Main St., St. Charles) is a vibrant home to the arts. Visitors can shop for original art, pottery, and jewelry, and visit the artist studios that are housed here.
*Writer’s Choice: Looking for art with a bit of an edgy oomph? The Philip Slein Gallery (314-621-4634, 1319 Washington Ave.) is a necessary stop along the hip stretch that is the Washington Avenue Loft District.
All in One
Rain, shine, snow, or sleet, our indoor shopping meccas allow us to comfortably flex our shopping muscles, grab a latte, catch a flick, and munch on a giant Cinnabon year-round. You won’t spot a Cinnabon at the elegantly occupied Plaza Frontenac (314-432-6760, Lindbergh & Clayton), but you will find luxurious stores, including the area’s only Saks Fifth Avenue. The St. Louis Galleria (314-863-5500, Clayton Rd. & Brentwood Blvd., M4;B1) and Westfield West County (314-288-2020, I-270 & Manchester Rd.,) are the area’s most comprehensive shopping centers. The Galleria is St. Louis’s exclusive home to Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, and Restoration Hardware, while Westfield West County houses the area’s only Nordstrom.
*Writer’s Choice: The Boulevard (314-558-4151, Brentwood Blvd. between Hwy. 40 & Clayton Rd.) is an outdoor shopping promenade with a small but expanding group of stores and restaurants, including St. Louis’s only Crate & Barrel.
