Spring Fever

Wintry winds are behind us, so swing into spring with these fashion-forward trends.

To the fashion-conscious, spring is one of the most anticipated times of the year. With fresh looks budding throughout the fashion world, it’s time to put away the bulky sweaters and snow boots, and strut the newest trends all over town. We may be the Second City, but we are first-rate when it comes to bringing this season’s hottest looks to life.

This year, it’s all about extremes. Whether it’s toting your oversized Fendi (Bloomingdale’s, 900 N. Michigan Ave., 312-440-4460) as the perfect accessory to your Chanel mini (Macy’s, 111 N. State St., 312-781-1000), or sporting a pair of streamlined Calvin Klein trousers (Nordstrom, 55 E. Grand Ave., 312-464-1515) with a great pair of aviator sunglasses, it’s about staying classic while embracing the right number of trendy pieces.

For the fashion-forward woman, this season puts a modern spin on some of your old favorites. Salvatore Ferragamo (645 N.Michigan Ave., 312-397-0464) is getting the ‘50s housewife out of the kitchen and onto the runways, inspiring everything from empire-waist cocktail dresses and floral prints to waist-length pea coats featuring an exaggerated fullsleeve at a 3/4 length. Yves Saint Laurent (51 E. Oak St., 312-751-8995) keeps the cuts clean and the colors sharp by pairing the skinny pant with a retro blazer, blending afternoon fashions right into nightlife. Even this season’s color palette falls in with this dichotomy, proving that pastels aren’t just for little girls in Easter bonnets, while reminding us that black is always the best bet.

Spice it up with a playful Mary-Jane from Prada, and the city sidewalks have just become your runway.

A Burberry (633 N. Michigan Ave., 312-787-2500) trench is a stylish basic and accommodates any occasion. Pair it with a neutralcolored loafer from Tod’s (121 E. Oak St., 312-943-0070) or spice it up with a playful Mary-Jane from Prada (30 E. Oak St., 312-951-1113), and the city sidewalks have just become your runway. If you’re not shy about showing off that great figure or could use some help in finding yours, add a wide-belt to any mundane outfit and instantly achieve that hourglass figure. To get a sleek, classic line and add some versatility to your wardrobe, try a masculine touch with a pinstriped vest, fitted blazer, or even a fedora. Giorgio Armani’s (800 N. Michigan Ave., 312-751-2244) collection specializes in this classic yet sexy look.

For the men out there who can tough it out with the boys, but aren’t afraid to compete with the ladies for best-dressed, this season depicts a look for all your moods. The minimalist, sleek sophisticate is always a stylish, yet manageable transformation from day to evening. Spice up your suit with a loud print by Gucci (900 N. Michigan Ave., 312-664-5504) or a square-toed slipon by Kenneth Cole (540 N. Michigan Ave., 312-644-1163). The layered, preppie looks of Ralph Lauren (750 N. Michigan Ave., 312-280-1655) are always classic and perfect for “casual Friday” at the office or a lazy Saturday afternoon.
